Parlodel contains the active ingredient Bromocriptine Mesilate, which is categorized as a dopamine agonist. Bromocriptine functions by activating dopamine receptors in the brain, leading to various outcomes and enabling the medication to serve multiple purposes.
Parlodel is primarily prescribed for treating disorders that arise from elevated levels of the hormone prolactin in the bloodstream. Prolactin is produced by the brain's pituitary gland. By stimulating dopamine receptors, Parlodel reduces prolactin production from the pituitary.
Elevated prolactin levels are linked to several health conditions. Excessive prolactin can result in abnormal breast milk production in both genders (galactorrhoea) and can suppress the sexual glands (hypogonadism), potentially leading to infertility. High prolactin levels may also be connected to various breast and menstrual disorders, thus lowering prolactin levels with bromocriptine can enhance these conditions.
Parlodel is also occasionally utilized to prevent or halt milk production for medical reasons following childbirth, miscarriage, or abortion. Since prolactin is the hormone responsible for milk production, reducing its levels with bromocriptine effectively ceases milk production.
Another application of Bromocriptine is to diminish prolactin production stemming from a type of pituitary tumor known as a prolactinoma.
The action of Bromocriptine on dopamine receptors also lowers growth hormone production from the pituitary gland, which is beneficial for conditions characterized by excess growth hormone, such as acromegaly.
Finally, Parlodel can be utilized in the treatment of Parkinson's disease. The neurotransmitter dopamine is typically reduced or absent in the brains of individuals with Parkinson's, which is believed to contribute to the disease's symptoms. By stimulating dopamine receptors with bromocriptine, it acts similarly to restoring dopamine in the brain, alleviating some symptoms of Parkinson's disease.
